Honda F20C Engine

F20C was the first engine to be used in Honda S2000. To get most out of the compact sized engine, Honda technicians utilised technology derived from Honda's racing engines . A low rod stroke ratio was set to to achieve very high engine speeds. VTEC system was refined for use in F20C. Its three-lobe, dual/triple cam follower arrangement has been optimized for high engine speeds. 2 liter DOHC straight four was fitted out with roller rockers, forged shallow skirt pistons, ladder frame main bearing stiffener and fibre reinforced aluminium for the cylinders. F20C engine can produce strong low-end torque, something most of other VTEC engines are missing, VTEC kicks in at 5850 RPM and the engine continue producing power up to 9000RPM.

Results were impressive. F20C was rated at 250PS for JDM cars, thanks to higher compression ratio, and 240PS for the rest of the world with a lower compression ratio. Besides its extreme power output compared to its size, F20C was also very efficient  that S2000 qualified as a Low-Emission Vehicle (LEV).

Honda F20C Engine

The F20C held the record for producing the highest specific power output for any mass production naturally aspirated piston engine with 123.5HP/L until Ferrari began production of 458 Italia in 2010, which produces 124.5 HP/L.

F20C has been designed more than a decade ago, but it's still one of the highest output per litre and highest revving engines ever made. In recognition of its incredible power output, the Honda S2000's engine has won the International Engine of the Year category for 1.8 to 2.2 litre engines five times in its lifetime.

Production of F20C has ended with production of S2000 in 2009.
