Honda K20 Engines

 

K20 is the first line of engines that belong to K-Series. It was relased in 2001 and was used in JDM Honda Stream. The i-VTEC system that the first engine had was an economy tuned version and it was delivering 156hp. Over 10 years Honda has relased more than 10 versions of K20 engines. AII K20 engines share the same short block design and have a displacement of 1998cc. Bore and stroke are both 86mm, which is also known as a square design. Undersquare engines have shorter strokes compared to their bores and deliver high endpower. Oversquare engines have the exact opposite features and they have higher torque output. A square design offers both good torque and good horsepower between these two extremes.

 

 

Design of the head and the way the i-VTEC operates defines either a K20 is economy or performance oriented. The first version utilizes i-VTEC to switch the engine between 12 valve and 16 valve modes inorder to reduce fuel comsuption . Until 2200RPM only 12 valves are active, at 2200RPM i-VTEC activates the remaining 4 valves.  (please read Honda K-Engines article for more information on i-VTEC system). K20A, K20A3, K20A4, K20A6 and K20Z2 are the engines with this configuration. The compression ratio is either 9.6:1 - 9.8:1 and power output is between 155 - 160hp.

 

Honda K20A2 Engine

 

Compared to the first version described above, the "real deal" K20 engines feature larger intake valves, smoother exhaust and intake manifolds and significantly higher compression ratios that range between 11.0:1 - 11.5:1. What makes the real difference is the way valves are manipulated. i-VTEC operates just like the VTEC system on B-Series with addition of VTC. There are high lift lobes on the camshafts which activate around 5800RPM and the engine revs all the way up to 8000RPM. The minimum power output is 200hp and as usual JDM K20A used in current JDM TypeType-R has the peak power output of 225hp. Other version that have similar properties are  K20A2, K20Z1, K20Z3 and K20Z4
