Mazda 20B-REW Engine

20B-REW engine is the biggest production engine Mazda has ever produced. B20-REW was only fitted to the Mazda Eunos Cosmo, which was a high specification, high performance luxury coupe only avaliable as a JDM model. Mazda Eunos Cosmo was sold from March 1990 until January 1996.

Instead of developing an engine from gound up, Mazda engineers have decided to rework the highly successfull 13B engine. The displacement of 13B engine was increased by adding another rotor. This new engine was displacing 1962cc with three 654cc rotors. Besides being the biggest producton Rotary Engine, B20-REW was also the first engine to have the squential twin turbo setup. Squential twin turbo setup was composed of a primary turbo with a small diameter and a secondary turbo which had a bigger diameter. The primary turbo could spool faster, thus improving low speed torque and eliminating turbo lag. The second turbo starts to spin as the primary turbo dumps exhaust into it to regulate its own boost. The secondary turbo fully kicked-in around 3500RPM just when the primary turbo struggles to feed the engine. This setup was later used on 13B-REW engine as well.

Though B20-REW was developed from 13B engine it was also sharing many components with Mazda's 3 rotor race engine, the 13G. These parts were, second centre housing with gear and bearing, eccentric shaft and counterweight assembly and intake/exhaust manifolds. Ignition system was also different from B13. B20-REW was using a distributorless electronic ignition system with one knock control sensor per rotor. 20B-REW was capable of delivering 280hp at 6500RPM. Thanks to the extra rotor it was producing much more torque compared to 13B engine. 390NM was available from as little as 2200RPM with a peak torque of 402NM at 3000RPM. B20-REW was a very reliable and efficient engine. Still it is the most rare and sought after rotary engine.
