Nissan VR38DETT Engine

 

Long awaited Nissan GT-R was introduced in October 2007. As expected, the object of interest was the power plant lying under the hood to replace the mighty RB26DETT. The new engine was named VR38DETT and it was solely designed to be used in Nissan GT-R. While designing VR38DETT, Nissan engineers benefited from the know-how gained from Nissan’s V8 race engines and the extremely successful VQ series engines. The result was a spectacular 3.8 liter V6 twin turbo engine that was capable of delivering 480hp.

 

 

Unlike its predecessor’s cast iron inline six block, VR38DETT utilizes a 60 degree V6 cast aluminum block. In order to ensure high rigidity and low vibration, a closed deck design was adopted. Nearly all of the engines with an aluminum block use iron liners to reinforce cylinder walls. Nissan took a different path and coated the cylinder walls with low carbon steel using a method called “plasma spraying”. In plasma spraying, metals are heated up to plasma state and then metal is sprayed to the surface to be coated. Using plasma spraying, Nissan managed to achieve a very thin (only 0.15mm thick), yet very durable coating. Plasma sprayed coating reduced friction and enhanced thermal efficiency of the engine. It also reduced the overall engine weight by 3kg compared to conventional iron liners. Enhanced thermal efficiency, reduced friction and lighter weight improved overall efficiency of the engine.

Nissan VR38DETT Engine

VR38DETT employs 24 valves controlled by dual overhead camshafts with variable valve timing on intake cams. The cast aluminum pent roof type cylinder head utilizes cross flow intake and exhaust layout. Each engine bank of VR38DETT has its own turbocharger that is capable of generating 10.2 psi pressure. To increase efficiency and save weight, IHI turbocharger housings are integrated into the exhaust manifolds.

 

One of the most significant characteristics of GT-R is its handling. Conditions where lateral gravity exceeds 1G is not uncommon. In order to cope with such conditions, lubrication system adopts both wet and dry sump methods. Lubrication system also employs oil radiator to keep the oil temperature optimum. Mobil has developed private oil for VR38DETT and the engine is out of warranty if this oil is not used.

 

 

High performance turbocharged engines are mostly set to operate at rich air fuel ratios rather than lean since in order to prevent any detonation that might cause an engine failure. Rich air fuel ratio increases the fuel consumption thereby emissions. VR38DETT is equipped with a feedback control system that changes air fuel ratio depending on the engine load. This system dramatically reduces the fuel consumption and emissions. VR38DETT conform ultra-low emission vehicle conditions.

 

The VR38DETT is hand assembled in a special clean-room environment at Nissan's Yokohama facility by specially trained technicians. Each engine is assembled by only one master technician. With the facelift on 2011 the engine output increased to 530 hp.
